How to care for clothes so they last

You know the feeling. A jumper you loved comes out of the wash a size smaller and a shape you do not recognise. A shirt collar that used to sit crisp now ripples like a crisp packet. Jeans that faded in all the wrong places. None of it was bad luck. It was almost always the care.

Most guides to looking after clothes start at the washing machine: which cycle, which temperature, how much detergent. I want to start somewhere else, because the machine is the last decision you make about a garment, not the first.

Take the care label. In the EU, the one thing the law actually requires on it is the fibre content, 100% cotton, 80% wool and 20% polyamide, and so on. That is Regulation 1007/2011. The little wash-and-iron symbols underneath are not required at all. They are a voluntary system, run and trademarked by a French body called GINETEX. That is not a complaint. Those symbols give you a safe minimum, the settings that will not wreck the garment. But a safe minimum is a floor, and most well-made clothes can do far better than it. To get there you only need to understand two things about a piece: what it is made of, and how it is built.

So that is where this guide goes. First the fibre, because it decides almost everything about how a garment wants to be treated. Then the construction: the seams, the linings, the hidden structure a good piece is built around. Along the way I will cover what actually wears clothes out, and why looking after them well is also the cheapest way to own good ones.

Start with what it is made of

Fibre is the first thing I check on any piece, before the cut and often before the price, because it decides almost everything about how a garment wants to be treated. Two jumpers can look the same on the rail and need opposite care. Learn this part once and you can look after almost anything you own without a second thought.

Cotton and linen

Cotton and linen are plant fibres, and they shrink for a specific reason: the fibres are held under tension when the yarn is spun and woven, and water lets those internal bonds relax back to a shorter length. Heat and the tumbling of a machine lock that shorter shape in for good. So the rule is simple. Wash cool and let them dry in the air, and they keep their size. Wash hot and tumble on high, and you slowly cook them smaller.

What ages cotton over the years is not washing itself so much as repeated high-heat drying, the constant abrasion of the drum, and chlorine bleach, which attacks the fibre directly. A long spell in strong sunlight will weaken cotton and linen over time too, though a few hours on the line is a gentle way to dry and nothing to worry about.

Wool, cashmere and merino

Here is the fibre most people wash far too often. Wool barely needs it. It holds a lot of moisture inside the fibre without ever feeling wet, which keeps its surface dry enough that the bacteria behind body odour struggle to multiply, and its inner structure locks odour molecules away. In practice that means you can wear a wool jumper several times, air it out overnight, and it comes back fresh. Woolmark, the industry body, backs the same wear-more-wash-less approach. One caution: this is wool staying fresh, not wool cleaning itself, so do not believe the self-cleaning line some sellers use.

When wool does need a wash, the thing that destroys it is heat, water and agitation all at once. Wool fibres are covered in tiny scales that ratchet in one direction. Hot water and a hard spin make them lock together and mat, and that felting is permanent. So use a proper wool cycle (a certified one runs up to 40 degrees with a gentle final spin, which is fine, the old ice-cold-never-spin rule is more cautious than it needs to be), or hand-wash in lukewarm water. Use a non-biological detergent, because the enzymes in biological ones are designed to break down protein, and wool is a protein. Then lay the garment flat to dry. Never hang it wet, because the weight of the water will stretch it out of shape as it dries. And store it clean, since the moth damage people fear is really the larvae eating the fibre, and they are drawn to wool marked with sweat or food.

Silk

Silk is also a protein fibre, and that one fact decides how you look after it. Skip biological detergents entirely, for the same reason as wool: their enzymes cannot tell your food stain from the fibre itself, and over enough washes they eat small holes in it. Keep silk out of direct sun, which breaks the fibre down and yellows it faster than almost any other material.

Silk also flips the wool rule on its head. Wool you wash rarely. Silk worn against skin you wash sooner, because perspiration slowly degrades the protein and sets stains. Hand-wash it in cool water with a gentle detergent, do not wring it, since wet silk is weak and distorts, and for anything structured or likely to bleed, dry cleaning is the safe choice.

Synthetics and blends

Polyester, nylon, acrylic and elastane are, in effect, fine plastics, and they soften and distort with heat well below the point where they would actually melt. That is why a hot wash or a hot dryer can permanently pucker, stiffen or shrink a synthetic piece. Keep them cool: 40 degrees at most for anything with elastane in it, ideally 30, and let them air-dry to protect their stretch.

Synthetics have one more quirk worth knowing. They cling to body oils and repel water, which is the opposite of what you want, so they hold onto smell far more stubbornly than wool or cotton even after a wash. And a wash sheds tiny plastic fibres from them, which I will come back to.

The rule for a blend is the one people miss most: it takes the care of its most delicate part, not its main one. A cotton and elastane t-shirt is mostly cotton, but the elastane sets the limit, so the whole thing wants a cool wash, no fabric softener and no tumble heat. Read the percentages, find the weakest fibre, and treat the garment as if it were made entirely of that.

Then look at how it is built

Fibre is half the story. The other half is construction, and this is the part a quick online guide never reaches, because you have to know what you are looking at. Durability and the ability to repair a piece come from how it is put together: the seams, the lining, the hidden structure in a collar or a waistband, the hardware.

A few things to notice, because each one changes how you should treat the garment. On hard-wearing wovens like jeans and shirts, an enclosed seam (a flat-felled seam, or a French seam on something finer) folds the raw edges away and spreads the strain across two rows of stitching, so it does not fray and outlasts a plain overlocked edge. The right seam still depends on the cloth, mind: a stretchy knit wants an overlocked seam that can move with it. Even, consistent stitching is a sign of care, at a density that suits the cloth, since fine shirting runs tighter than denim by design. A lining is not there for show. It covers and protects the inner seams, reduces the friction on the outer cloth and takes the wear in high-rub areas, which is why a lined coat lasts. And the structure in a tailored collar or a stiff waistband is often held by a fusible layer glued in with heat, which a hot, aggressive wash can loosen, leaving that bubbled, rippled look you can never iron out.

That leads to two habits worth making automatic. Fasten zips and buttons and turn a garment inside out before it goes in the machine, so nothing snags and the wear lands on the inside. And treat structured, lined and tailored pieces gently: cool wash or air only, and iron on the reverse or under a cloth at a heat that suits both the shell and the lining, since the two can shrink at different rates and twist the garment between them.

Knitwear: fold it

A knit is a structure of loops, with no fixed grid to hold its shape, so it stretches under its own weight. Hang a heavy jumper and all that weight pulls down on the shoulder loops until they lengthen and never fully recover. So fold your knitwear, always. Wash it inside out, in a mesh bag if you have one, to cut the rubbing that causes pilling. Reshape it by hand while it is damp and dry it flat. And when it does pill, lift the pills off with a fabric shaver or a knit comb. Do not pull them, because pulling drags out the anchoring fibres and thins the knit into a hole.

Denim: wash it less, inside out

Indigo does not bond to cotton the way most dyes do. It sits on the surface of the yarn, a blue skin over a white core, held there physically rather than chemically. That is why jeans fade at the knees and the hips: those high-contrast fades are abrasion wearing the indigo off where you move most. Wash denim rarely, cold and inside out, and you keep both the colour and the fit. Turning them inside out puts the wash abrasion on the pale inner threads instead of the blue face, and cold water spares the cotton from shrinking.

One thing to drop: the freeze-your-jeans trick does not work. A freezer only sends the odour bacteria dormant, and they wake up again the moment the denim warms against your body. Airing helps with smell. Freezing does not clean anything.

Tailoring: hang it, brush it, clean it rarely

This is the deliberate opposite of the knitwear rule, worth saying in the same breath so it does not confuse: you fold knits, but you hang structured tailoring, because a jacket is built around an internal canvas and a shaped shoulder made to carry its weight from a broad, rounded hanger. A thin wire hanger dents that shoulder line, so use a proper wooden one and let the jacket rest a day between wears.

A tailored jacket also wants cleaning far less than people think. The cloth is wool carrying its own natural oils, and every dry clean strips some of them and presses the life out of the fibres, so once a year is plenty. Between times, air it, brush it down with a soft clothes brush to lift dust before it wears the weave, and use a little steam to drop creases. Keep the steam off the chest and lapel, where the internal structure lives.

Where you keep it

Two storage habits pay off across everything you own. Put clothes away clean, because sweat, body oils and food are what draw clothes moths, whose larvae eat wool, silk and other animal fibres, and because those same residues set into stains over time. And give the wardrobe room to breathe. Cramming traps damp against natural fibres, crushes knits and flattens tailoring, and gives moths the dark, undisturbed corner they like.

What actually wears clothes out

If you strip all of this back, two things do most of the damage, and both are free to avoid: heat and over-washing.

Start with temperature, because this is where I changed my own habits after looking into it. Modern detergents are built around enzymes that lift dirt at 20, 30 and 40 degrees, so for everyday laundry a hot wash buys you very little and costs you a lot: most of the energy a machine uses goes on heating the water, and dropping to 30 degrees cuts a large part of that. The nuance worth keeping is that a cool wash cleans, it does not disinfect, and for normal clothes in a healthy home that is all you need. Save the hot wash for the times that call for it: someone ill in the house, and a monthly run at 60 degrees with the drum empty to stop bacteria and that musty smell building up in the machine’s seal.

Next, wash less. Every cycle rubs and flexes the fibres, which is what pills a jumper and thins a collar, so a garment that is not actually dirty is better aired than washed. When you do wash, fill the machine, because a full load leaves less room for clothes to thrash against each other. Skip the fabric softener too. It works by coating the fibres, and that coating kills the absorbency of towels and clogs the wicking in sportswear.

While the clothes rub against each other, synthetics are also shedding tiny plastic fibres into the water. To put a number on it, one 2016 study found that a single six-kilo load of acrylic-heavy synthetics shed more than 700.000 microplastic fibres. The levers that reduce it are the same good habits from every other angle: wash cooler, fuller, less often, and skip the tumble dryer, which sheds yet more fibre as lint and eats electricity a clothes line does not.

One last note, since it comes up a lot. A soak in a vinegar-and-water mix does cut sweat smells out of cotton and synthetics, but keep vinegar away from wool and silk, from anything with elastane or rubber in it, and out of the machine itself, where it degrades the seals over time. For limescale, citric acid is the safer choice.

The cheapest way to own good clothes

All this care has a point beyond tidiness, and it is a practical one. The single biggest lever on a garment’s footprint is how long it stays in use: the UK waste body WRAP found that keeping clothes in active use for nine months longer cuts their carbon, water and waste footprints by around 20 to 30 per cent each. Over the fifteen years to 2017, the average number of times a garment was worn before being thrown out fell by more than a third, while the amount of clothing made roughly doubled. We are buying more and wearing each piece less, and care is the quiet fix for both.

It is a money argument as much as anything, and cost per wear is the honest way to see it. A well-made coat at 150€ worn 200 times costs you 0,75€ each time you put it on. A 40€ coat you tire of after 20 wears costs you 2€ a wear, and you had to shop twice. Care is simply the multiplier on the wears side of that sum. Look after the 150€ coat and it might reach 400 wears. Neglect it and it never gets close. Research on cost per wear finds that once people see clothing this way, they lean towards fewer, better-made pieces, which is the whole idea.

The rules are starting to catch up with the logic, too. The EU’s ecodesign regulation, in force since 2024, names clothes and shoes as a priority for durability and repairability, so made-to-last is slowly becoming something the law expects rather than a personal preference. That shift is still arriving, not here yet, but it points the same way this whole guide does.

Care is the second half of craftsmanship

It is easy to think the making ends when a garment is finished and handed over the counter. It does not. A piece made to last only lasts if it is looked after, and the good news is that looking after it well asks for less, not more: less heat, less washing, less pulled out of shape on a bad hanger. Learn what a thing is made of and how it is built, and the care stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling obvious.
