Your “cotton” is not always cotton.
What makes cotton premium, and how to recognise it

Two shirts hang side by side, both labelled 100% cotton. One will pill by autumn and twist at the seams after ten washes. The other will still look composed in five years. The label gives you no way to see this coming, because “cotton” is a single legal word for a fibre that ranges from coarse commodity crop to varieties so rare the world grows a few hundred bales a year. The gap between those two shirts is knowable, though. You just have to know where the information lives, because very little of it is sewn in.

What the label legally guarantees

The short version of the law: in the EU, the composition label must name the fibres from an official list, in descending order by weight, and “100% cotton” tolerates at most 2% of stray fibre, and only where it is technically unavoidable rather than routine. A stated percentage is legally true within three points. That precision is real, and so are its limits. When the European Commission lab-tested 132 garments in 2025, the labels were wrong on 37% of them, and the invented fibre names of marketing get policed too: American regulators spent a decade fining retailers, 5,5 million USD at the last round, for selling viscose as “bamboo”. So the label is the floor. Everything that separates my two shirts, the variety, the fibre length, the spinning, the farming, lives above that floor, in claims the brand volunteers or does not.

The quality ladder starts with staple length

Cotton quality has a master variable, and it is the length of the individual fibre, the staple. Ordinary upland cotton, roughly 90% or more of the world crop, has fibres of about 24 to 28 millimetres. Extra-long staple cotton, the class behind every premium name you have heard, starts at about 34,9 millimetres and makes up less than 3% of world production. Three extra millimetres sound like nothing. In a spun yarn they change everything: longer fibres mean fewer fibre ends in every centimetre of thread, so the yarn is stronger, can be spun finer and smoother, and has fewer loose ends poking out to tangle into pills. A long-staple shirt does not just feel better on day one. It is still wearing its surface years later, because the fibres are long enough to stay put.

Staple is the master variable, not the only one. How the fibre is spun multiplies or squanders it. Combed cotton has had its short fibres removed before spinning, which is why combed yarn is smoother and stronger than carded. Ring-spun yarn is stronger and finer than the faster open-end method that dominates cheap basics. Two-ply yarn twists two threads together for strength and evenness. None of this appears on the sewn-in label either, but brands that pay for it usually say so, and now you know what the words mean.

The premium names, decoded

The famous cotton names are varieties and provenances, and each is backed by something different, so it is worth knowing exactly what. Pima is the American-grown strain of the long-staple species. Supima is stricter: a trademark owned by the American growers’ association, licensed only for 100% American Pima, through a programme brands have to join. Of the three big names it is the most controlled. “Egyptian cotton” is the opposite case: the phrase itself is largely unregulated, and what actually carries weight is the Cotton Egypt Association’s gold seal, a registered logo with a licence number, backed since 2016 by DNA testing of accredited manufacturers. Giza 45 and its siblings are the varietal names behind the good stuff. Sea Island, the rarest of all, is the West Indian strain, authenticated by its own association with a numbered hologram, and produced in quantities reported at around 130 to 150 bales a year, though that figure comes from the association’s own side.

Why does the backing matter more than the name? Because the name has been worth faking. In 2016, one of the world’s biggest home-textile suppliers, Welspun, was found to have sold Target around 750.000 sheets and pillowcases labelled 100% Egyptian cotton that were not. Target ended the relationship, Walmart and Bed Bath and Beyond pulled or reviewed products, and Welspun’s shares lost roughly 43% of their value. The Egyptian industry’s own association estimated the following year that some 90% of “Egyptian cotton” products worldwide were fake, an estimate from an interested party, but a telling one. The composition label in all those sheets said cotton, and it was cotton. The premium was in a word the label never has to prove.

Organic, certified, conventional: what each word promises

The other axis of cotton quality is how it was farmed and processed, and here the words on the hangtag mean more precise things than most shoppers assume. Conventional cotton is the default, about 98% of the crop, farmed with roughly 5% of the world’s pesticide sales and 10% of its insecticides, per the industry’s own data. Organic cotton was 1,4% of world production in the 2020/21 season, and the strongest label it can carry is GOTS. Read a GOTS logo precisely: the fibre is certified organic at farm level, and GOTS itself then audits everything after the farm, the dyeing, the finishing, the chemicals, the working conditions, all the way down the chain. It comes in two grades, “organic” for at least 95% certified fibre and “made with organic materials” for at least 70%, and every certificate can be looked up in a public database. That last part is the useful one: a real GOTS claim comes with a certificate number you can check in two minutes.

OEKO-TEX is the label most often mistaken for organic, and it is nothing of the kind. Its Standard 100 is a chemical-safety test on the finished textile: the fabric was checked against limits for over a thousand harmful substances, with the strictest class covering baby textiles. That is worth having, and it says nothing at all about how the cotton was farmed. Conventionally grown cotton passes Standard 100 every day, legitimately. The two certifications answer different questions: GOTS asks how it was made, Standard 100 asks what is left in the fabric touching your skin. One more line for completeness: Better Cotton, the volume initiative many high-street brands cite, works by mass balance, meaning the certified volume is tracked at industry level and the fibre in your specific garment is usually not traceable to a certified farm. Its own site says so. There is more to say about certifications and the words around them, and I will, in a separate piece. For a cotton label, these are the ones that matter.

How to recognise good cotton before you buy

So here is the method, in the order I apply it. The label first, for the floor: the fibre, the percentages, and a first plausibility check, because a blend with 40% polyester is answering the durability question differently than the marketing photo suggests. Then the brand’s own pages, because everything above the floor lives there or nowhere: the variety named (Supima, Giza, Sea Island), the staple length or the words that imply it (combed, ring-spun, two-ply, long-staple), the certificate numbers behind a GOTS or Standard 100 claim. A brand that pays for better fibre and cleaner processing says so, in checkable detail, because it costs them real money. Silence on all of it is an answer too. Then the price, held against what you now know: extra-long staple is under 3% of the world crop, so it cannot be cheap, and finished garments in it are reported to carry premiums of 20 to 50% over ordinary cotton, more at the rarity end. Sea Island bedlinen at high-street prices has answered its own question. And in the shop, your hands: a denser, smoother, less hairy surface is the feel of long fibres and combed yarn, and it is the same property that resists pilling later.

The other side

Two honest limits on all of this. Premium fibre does not guarantee a premium garment: construction and finishing still decide most of how a piece performs, and in the big durability test I wrote about in the lifespan column, heavier ordinary cottons beat lighter, fancier shirts. Buy the make, not just the fibre. And cotton as a crop carries its own ledger whatever the variety: the Aral Sea lost around 90% of its area to irrigation, above all for cotton. Better cotton exists. Innocent cotton does not.

Read the line, then read past it

The composition label will only ever say cotton, and a third of the time it is wrong about even that. But the word is where the trail starts: the variety on the product page, the licence behind the premium name, the certificate number you can look up, the yarn words that predict how the surface will age, the price that either adds up or does not. That is a few minutes of reading for a garment meant to last years. The marketing is printed on cardboard and swings off the sleeve. The knowledge is one layer down, and now you have the map.
